WHEN: 2nd Thursday 10.30-12.00am starting October until March 2009
ORGANISER: Marion Dell
WHERE: HH1
This is a monthly group with around 15 regular members. We meet for informal discussion about the lives and work of writers who have lived in, or written about, the area around Haslemere. We began by thinking about what drew writers to the area. We have discussed works by old favourites such as Tennyson and Edward Thomas and less well known authors such as Mollie Panter-Downes, with some seasonal light relief at our Christmas meeting. If you'd like to join us you will be very welcome.
Please ring Marion Dell for a reading list or more information.

| October 9th | H.G. Wells | If you have time, please read H.G. Wells' novel Tono Bungay, available from the library or as a Penguin paperback. Parts of this novel are set at Uppark, fictionalised by Wells as Bladesover. Much of the novel is also set in Midhurst where Wells lived for a time. Please bring copies of the novel if you can. We will also find out how Mr Hoopdriver went to Haslemere! |
| November 13th | Arthur Conan Doyle | We will read one of Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes
stories written while he lived in Hindhead. I will give
out copies at the October meeting. You might like to read Julian Barnes' novel Arthur and George, again from the library or as a Vintage paperback. This is a lightly fictionalised account of an episode in his life and includes descriptions of Undershaw in Hindhead. |
| December 11th | Flora Thompson | We will read extracts from Flora Thompson's memoir Heatherley about her time at Grayshott at the very end of the nineteenth century, and also from The Peverel Papers written while she lived at Liphook in the 1920s and describing the local area. I will give out extracts at the November meeting. |
